How to Get Into Choate: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to get into Choate Rosemary Hall: the steps from the Inquiry Form to decision day, what the school looks for, and mistakes to avoid.

There is no formula for getting into Choate, and the school says so itself: it sets no minimum requirements and does not publish average GPAs or test scores. What you can do is complete every part of the application well and on time, using what Choate says it looks for. That means a clear academic record, an online interview, honest essays, strong teacher recommendations, and optional test scores if they help.

This guide puts the pieces in order for a family starting from nothing.

What Choate says it looks for

Choate's admission page describes a school built for students ready to meet challenge, possibility, people, and purpose. It says it wants applicants to show up as themselves and names integrity, respect, compassion, and a steady sense of humor as values it looks for. The application asks about academic background, interests, responsibilities, and perspective. The school does not offer a checklist of accomplishments, so do not invent one for your child.

Step 1: choose the grade and status

Choate describes applicant pathways for grades 9, 10, and 11 and for postgraduate students, and each applicant applies to one grade. Connecticut applicants choose day or boarding at submission. Choate recommends day status for students living within a reasonable drive of campus, and says its day students come mainly from New Haven County and towns in Hartford and Middlesex counties. Changing later requires a formal written request.

Step 2: complete the Inquiry Form

This is the first of Choate's six steps. It brings invitations to admission events and the email that lets your student sign up for an interview. Choate also describes in-person visits and a 360-degree virtual tour on its campus tour page.

Step 3: do the interview

Strongly encouraged and must be completed in the current cycle. It is online, one per applicant, scheduled for 45 minutes. See the Choate interview guide.

Step 4: decide on testing

Testing is optional and not penalized. For grade 9, Choate accepts the SSAT or ISEE taken on or after June 2026. See the guide to Choate SSAT and ISEE scores before deciding whether to submit.

Step 5: build the Gateway application

Register with Gateway to Prep Schools and complete the Candidate Profile. Part 2 is the essays and the Parent/Guardian Statement, and Part 3 holds the school and teacher materials. For writing, see the guide to Choate essays and writing components. For the full list of parts, see the Choate application guide.

Recommendations come from current English and mathematics teachers and from a counselor or principal who also sends the transcript. Ask early and give people the deadline.

Step 6: apply for aid if you need it

Check the aid box and complete the Clarity Application after September 1, due January 15. Choate meets 100% of demonstrated need. See the Choate financial aid guide.

Step 7: hit the dates

January 15 is the application and aid deadline. February 1 is the date for late materials and current-year performance. March 10 is the decision date. See the Choate admissions timeline. Choate gives no application opening date, so do not wait for one.

A sensible order of work

Families often ask what to do first. A practical sequence, using only the steps Choate lists, looks like this.

  • Late summer and early fall. Submit the Inquiry Form, sign up for the interview when the invitation arrives, and decide whether testing makes sense. If you plan to apply for aid, note that the Clarity Application opens after September 1.
  • Fall. Register with Gateway, finish the Candidate Profile, and ask teachers and your school's counselor for recommendations. Start the essays and the Parent/Guardian Statement once you can read the prompts.
  • Early winter. Finish and review the written work, confirm that every recommender has what they need, and submit before January 15.
  • Late winter. Send any late materials and current-year performance by February 1, then watch the Application Status Portal for the March 10 decision.

Choate does not state an application opening date or a reply-by date for admitted families, so check the admissions site and your decision materials for those.

What a strong file looks like

Choate does not describe a model applicant, so avoid anyone who claims to know one. What the school does describe is a complete, honest application. That means grades and course choices that show the student has been working at their level, recommendations from teachers who know them, an interview where the student can talk about what they care about, and writing that sounds like a real person. It also means a student who understands why they want a boarding or day community in Wallingford, and has looked at the school's courses, activities, and campus before applying.

What not to chase

  • A number. Choate publishes no acceptance rate. See the Choate acceptance rate guide.
  • A magic activity. The school asks who your child is, not what they collected.
  • A perfect test score. Choate says it never assesses a student solely on test scores.
  • A ghostwritten essay. Part 2 is the student's voice.

Common mistakes

  • Starting in December. Interviews, teacher requests, and drafts take time.
  • Skipping the interview. It is strongly encouraged.
  • Choosing the wrong status. Day or boarding is a real decision.
  • Missing the aid steps. The box and the Clarity application are separate.
  • Relying on third-party advice about prompts or rates. Use the school's site and Gateway.
